Portugal - Pastéis de Nata
These gorgeous golden custard tarts are utterly irresistible. From their rich sweet filling to the crisp flaky pastry, what's not to love?
Greece - Portokalopita
A delicious alternative to your average cake, packed full of orange flavour and really easy to make. You start out by tearing the Filo Pastry and leaving it to dry for a few hours before soaking it in custard. Once its baked, drench the entire cake in cinnamon infused orange syrup. Heaven!
Lithuania - Medaus Tortas
A tasty cake layered with honey biscuits & lemon sour cream filling. Delish!
Samoa - Pani Popo
Delicious, moist coconut rolls with a sweet thickened coconut milk poured over the top before baking. Heaven for all you coconut lovers
Cyprus - Flaouna
A typical easter bake from Cyrpus, Flaouna is a delicious cheese pastry filled with mint, raisins and herbs. The dough is coated in white sesame seeds before adding in the filling which gives these a delicious nutty flavour. If you can, get your hands on the traditional spices (I’ve included some substitutions in case you can’t.)
The Netherlands - Stroopwafel
Whenever I can get my hands on Stroopwafels, I do. They’re my favourite treat to go alongside an afternoon coffee. I love the way they get all gooey and soft when they side atop your mug for a few minutes. Although I adore them so, I’ve never had a fresh Stroopwafel. So, until I can plan a trip to The Netherlands to fetch one, homemade will have to be the next best thing.
